You do not have to live on "I hope so." God wrote His answer down so you may know.
Did I lock the door? Is the stove off?
Everyone knows that feeling. You are warm in bed, nearly asleep, and the question will not let you rest. So you get up and check - because when something matters, "pretty sure" is not enough.
Now let me ask you something gently. Have you ever felt that way about heaven?
Most people do. Maybe you have stood at a funeral and wondered. Maybe you have prayed and then wondered if it counted. Maybe you have been in church your whole life and still, on the quiet nights, the question comes: if I died tonight, would I really be with God?
Here is the kindest thing I can tell you: God saw you checking the handle. And He did not leave the question hanging.
If getting to heaven depends on being good enough, then honestly, no one could ever know. We would check ourselves forever - because our best days and our worst days live in the same heart. You can be patient at breakfast and unkind by supper. So which one gets weighed?
God settled that question Himself:
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
Grace is an old word that simply means a kindness you did not earn. Read that verse slowly: not of yourselves... it is the gift of God... not of works. Heaven is not a paycheck for good behavior. It is a gift.
That changes everything about the question. You do not have to wonder if you have done enough, because "enough" was never the arrangement. A gift is not measured. A gift is received - by faith.
The Bible calls God's answer a record - something written down on purpose, so it could be read and trusted:
"And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life."
1 John 5:11-12 (KJV)
Notice what the record is about. Not your church attendance. Not your worst moment. His Son.
And what did the Son do? This:
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

While we were yet sinners - not after we cleaned up. Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Everything that stood between you and God - every sin, every failure, every 2 a.m. regret - Jesus carried it to the cross. And the empty tomb is God's receipt that the payment was enough.
That is why you can know. The record was never about whether you are good enough. It is about whether He was. And He was.
Listen to how Jesus Himself said it. The old words are worth reading slowly:
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."
John 5:24 (KJV)
Two little words carry all the comfort: hath and is passed.
Hath means has. Right now. Present tense. Not "might get someday if the scales balance."
Is passed means already moved - the way you pass from one room into another. The believer is not waiting in a hallway hoping the door opens. Jesus says the one who trusts Him has already crossed over, from death unto life.
Maybe you are thinking: but what if I let go? What if my faith has weak days?
Jesus answered that too, and it may be the most tender thing He ever said about His own:
"And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."
John 10:28 (KJV)
You are not holding on to Him with your strength. He is holding you with His. Never perish is His promise, and nothing - not even your worst day - can pry open that hand.
And the One making the promise?
"In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began."
Titus 1:2 (KJV)
God cannot lie. That is not a compliment; it is His nature. When He writes "never," He is not being optimistic. He is telling you what will happen.
Here is the verse this whole page has been walking toward. God had John write a letter to believers, and near the end he tells them exactly why:
"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."

Read the middle again: that ye may KNOW.
Not hope. Not assume. Not "find out when you get there." God wrote it down for the very reason you get up at night and check the handle - because He knows how we are, and He did not want His children guessing about His love.
The same God who gave us a manual for living put your assurance in writing.
Maybe you trusted Christ years ago, and the question still visits you at night. Friend, be at peace: doubting your feelings is not the same as losing His promise.
Feelings rise and fall with sleep, seasons, and hard days. His record does not. On the nights you cannot feel saved, you do not need a better feeling. You need the same thing you needed the first time: His written word. Open 1 John 5:13 and read it slowly, with your own name in mind. He wrote it for exactly that night.
Assurance does not come from looking in. It comes from looking at Him.
So - can you know you are going to heaven?
God says yes. Not because you are good enough, but because Jesus is, and God cannot lie, and He put it in writing.
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

Whosoever means anyone. It means you.
There are no magic words - God listens to hearts, not scripts. But if you want to trust Him right now, you could tell Him something like this:
"God, I cannot earn my way to You, and I am done guessing. I believe Jesus died for my sins and rose again. I am trusting Him alone - not my goodness. Thank You for writing Your promise down so I can know. Amen."
If you are trusting Christ alone, then on the authority of God's written word: you have eternal life. Not "hope so." Know so.
